Hypnotherapy has been shown to alleviate pain such as that experienced in childbirth or from dental treatment, and offers a cure for phobias and addictions such as smoking. Contrary to popular belief the person undergoing treatment is not under the hypnotherapist's control but is in fact deeply relaxed yet aware of their surroundings. Hypnotherapy draws on the power of the imagination to replace negative patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour with more fulfilling ones and is a form of direct communication between the therapist and the client's subconscious mind in which the client is more open to positive suggestions and new patterns of thinking.
