INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE WRITING Event Cancelled

Patricia Fleming

They say that each of us has a book inside us, which means we each have a story to tell that is unique.  Perhaps you would like some guidance on how to record your unique and real story - the sessions on Life Writing (biography/autobiography) could provide this.  But our own stories can also be woven with imagined stories to create something that goes beyond our lived life, and this can be in a range of forms – short story, novel, poem, radio play, theatre play, screenplay – all of which have their own formats and some basic ‘rules’ that are useful to learn even if you go on to break them!  What this introductory course aims to do above all else is to give you space to write creatively and try out different ways of writing that you may not have thought of trying before.

In a series of eight workshops, we will look at a range of writing genres and build a ‘tool kit’ of writing skills. We will use examples of published works as a springboard for writing practice, which can then be developed during the following week using exercises suggested by the tutor.

Although some feedback will form part of each session, the course is not designed for writers who are looking for detailed feedback on their work.  The course aims to provide people with little or no writing experience an opportunity, above all, to WRITE – budding writers who would like an opportunity to see if writing creatively is something they want to build into their daily lives, as a hobby or as a basis for a more regular writing practice.  It could also appeal to writers who have only written prose or poetry so far and who would like to try other genres, or to ‘stalled’ writers who need some inspiration and a regular writing time to get the ink flowing again.

In small groups and a supportive environment you will be free to explore your own creativity and see where your ideas take you!
